Sports cardiology is a relatively new and rapidly evolving field which is aimed to promote safe participation in exercise and sports in both competitive and recreational athletes. With the promotion of physical activity and exercise as an antidote to cardiovascular morbidity, there is a growing population of amateur athletes training for and competing in mass events such as marathons. Consequently, there is an ever-increasing demand for experts in this field with the appropriate knowledge and skills to care for athletes with cardiovascular disease and ensure safe participation in sports.
